Welcome to Maheen's mind

Hi! Thank you for wanting to explore my mind, it has a lot to offer! I am an established mixed media artist who focuses on the use of colour and texture to convey messages and my unique life experience. I am a queer, Pakistani woman which I touch on a lot with my art! Experience my work through my galleries on this website and what they all mean to me. I have worked with multiple clients to complete commissions, some of which are on this website. I take commissions through my contact tab which can be found here  .

My story

Here is a bit more about me and how I got established in my practice!

Coming from council housing and a rough family background, I always used art as an escape as well as a form of therapy which carried onto my practice. I have spent the better part of my life trying to fit into social norms, trying to be similar to my white peers, trying to deny my sexuality to feel accepted and feeling stuck in those feelings. All really horrible but I wouldn't have it any other way, it has shaped me as a person and as an artist. But because of these feelings, it led me down a path of studying Biomedical Science in 2021 (opposite to art, most would say) which ultimately came to an end when I dropped out. Since then I have been working hard to further myself in my practice and work towards many goals that I have achieved!

Studying A-Level Art made me fall in love with colour and texture. The Fauvism art movement completely transformed my view on colour and I applied a lot of this to my art. Using bright, whimsical colours helped me connect with my inner child and helped me heal from a lot of rough times in my upbringing. I let go of the idea that realism was the only form of true art and started working on abstract pieces that really spoke to me. I have since created pieces like "girlhood" and "moving" which you can find in my gallery. I achieve a lot of texture in my artwork through thick brushstrokes, clay and layer of different mediums. I am skilled in using acrylic, inks, clay as well as the practice of lino - printing.

A lot of the themes I touch on come from the feeling of being "stuck", whether that be in your career, relationships or life in general. I feel this is something that is common in my generation, especially as inflation and the political climate can really affect our mental health. For this reason I focus a lot on sexuality and discrimination and how this not only affects me but millions of young people. Examples of this theme can be found in my gallery. More examples of themes I touch on are identity, the divine feminine, the human figure and social change.

Since dropping out I have achieved a lot of goals such as having my own studio located in Kiln Farm, being in my first exhibition and creating more art than ever. If my work interests you and you would like to chat, don't hesitate to contact me! (Did I mention I also love drawing cats...)
